Praxis® Test Retake Policy

What Happens if I Fail the Praxis Test?

Students who are required to take the Praxis as part of their state's teaching licensure or certification process will need to pass their designated Praxis tests before they can teach in a classroom. However, each state sets its Praxis passing scores, and therefore, a passing score in one state may not be a passing score in a different state. If you do not pass the Praxis the first time that they take it, you are welcome to retake the exam. In order to complete a retake Praxis test, you must wait 28 days or more after their latest test date. This rule holds true even if you go ahead and cancel the scores for your most recent exam. If you try to register and retake the Praxis prior to the 28-day waiting period, the scores of your retake exam will be canceled. You will also not receive a refund for the test fees associated with your retake.

How Many Times Can I Take the Praxis?

If you're wondering 'how many times can I take the Praxis?' or even parts of the Praxis, such as 'how many times can you take the Praxis II?' you'll be glad to learn that there is no limit to how many times you can take any exam within the Praxis series. This unlimited retake policy even applies to the individual subtests that make up an exam. For example, some exams, like the Praxis Core, have multiple subject subtests. If you pass the reading and math subtests of the Praxis Core but fail the Praxis Core Writing, then you are allowed to continue taking the writing subtest as many times as you need to pass.

Registering to Retake the Praxis

If you're planning on retaking the Praxis, you must wait the required 28 days before registering. Praxis registration for retakes of the exam is the same as registration for the initial exam and can be done online, through the mail, or by phone. You may want to consider waiting for the scores of your initial exam before registering for a retake to ensure that you need the retake. This is because retakes still charge the exam fee. The Praxis test cost for retakes varies from $50 to $209, depending on the exam.

The time that it takes to receive one's test scores also varies by exam. Scores for subtests may come sooner than full exams, as they are shorter. Praxis test score reports may also come faster for multiple-choice exams vs. constructed-response exams, as these exams take longer to score. You can use Praxis dates to select an exam and test date to see your expected score date. It is also important to note that students who decide to retake an exam are not required to take their retake at the same testing location as their initial exam. Therefore, students are free to select a different in-person testing site or choose to test at home if the option is available for their exam.

Praxis Test Preparation Materials and Study Guides

Students who decide to retake a Praxis exam may want to prepare for their retake a little differently than their initial exam. A great start is utilizing the study materials made available by the ETS Praxis website. Students can examine detailed study companions for each Praxis exam that gives sample questions and details about the exam format and content. There are also study plans available to help students develop a studying strategy for taking the test. Other helpful tips and strategies are also available, as well as videos for what to expect on test day and work through a Praxis exam.
