Overview of the Praxis II Science Test

The Praxis 2 Science 5005 exam is designed to assess whether a candidate has the knowledge and skills needed for teaching science at the elementary school level. The test lasts for 60 minutes. Candidates will take this Praxis exam on a computer and answer a total of 55 questions. All of the questions provided are multiple-choice and candidates will be able to use an on-screen scientific calculator. Students will be expected to understand how to use the calculator before the test. The test covers life, earth, and physical sciences at the elementary level; the questions are similar to what would be covered in an elementary education bachelor's degree.

A certain number of questions on the test are dedicated to each type of science. Seventeen to eighteen questions are dedicated to earth science, eighteen to nineteen questions are dedicated to life science, and eighteen to nineteen questions are dedicated to physical science. This way, each section of questions makes up for about 33% of the exam, allowing each type of science an equal section. Although all the questions are multiple-choice, the answers to some questions may be formatted differently.   • How living systems, such as cells, tissues and organs, and life processes, are structured and how they function
  • The processes of reproduction and hereditary traits, such as growth and development, how traits are inherited through patterns, and heredity on a molecular basis
  • How living things change over time, such as natural selection, life cycles, adaptations, and mutations
  • The behavior and regulation of living systems, such as life cycles, controlling the internal environment, and responses to external stimuli
  • How living systems are unified and diverse, as well as classification of living organisms and adaptation
  • How organisms are interdependent, such as ecosystems, communities, and populations of living things
  • The personal health of humans, including nutrition, substance abuse, and communicable diseases

Physical Science

The physical science portion of the test covers numerous areas related to physical forces and anatomy, and how those forces interact with each other, the Earth, and how those forces and interactions affect life for humans. The test is designed to measure whether candidates understand the following:

  • The structure of matter, physical and chemical properties, including changes in physical/chemical states, solutions, and mixtures, and atoms and elements
  • How forces and motions work, including types of motion and the laws of motion, forces, and equilibrium
  • The different forms of energy, how it is transferred and conserved, as well as how simple machines work
  • The different interactions of energy and matter, including magnetism, electricity, and sound, among others

Like the other portions of the test, candidates will need to demonstrate that they understand the importance of science as a fundamental concept that works in diverse and unifying ways, and how to use scientific materials, research, and resources.

How to Register for the Praxis II Science Exam

There are 3 different ways to register for the Praxis II science 5005 exam: online, by mail, and by phone. Each registration method has its own guidelines and length of time to complete the process.

Praxis online registration is one of the quicker methods. To start, you will need to create a Praxis account or log in to one if you already have one. A verifiable e-mail address will be required to create an account. Once you're in your account, you can click the register option and select which test you need to take. After that, you can schedule the date and location of your test. If you choose to test at a Praxis testing center, you will need to print out an admission ticket. Lastly, you must pay a registration fee with a credit/debit card, eCheck, or PayPal; the registration fee for the Praxis 5005 science test is $64.

To register for Praxis exam by mail, you must complete the Test Authorization Voucher Request Form and mail it to the appropriate place. Once it's been processed, you will receive a voucher number and instructions on how to complete registration. It can take 3 weeks for the voucher to be delivered. If you are taking the Praxis licensure exam at a center, you will have to print out an admission ticket; it will not be mailed to you.

To register by phone, you must already have a Praxis testing account and plan to test at a Praxis testing center. Registering by phone costs an extra $35. At least four days before the test date, call ETS to pay the Praxis II fees.

Praxis test dates and locations will be available for you to search when you register, but you can also look them up by using the Praxis Test Dates and Locations Tool. On test day, it's important to follow the rules and guidelines for Praxis testing, which include:

  • Arrive 30 minutes before the start of the test
  • Take the required identification and documents with you, and make sure the names match the name you used to register
  • Phones, watches, and technology of any kind are prohibited at the Praxis testing center
  • Don't bring any personal items unless you have been approved to receive Praxis accommodations
  • Remain in the test center building, even during allotted breaks, until you are dismissed

Violation of any of these rules could result in being dismissed from taking the Praxis exam and not receiving a refund.
