Understanding Your MTEL Results and MTEL Test Scores

MTEL Test Scores

While MTEL scores do vary, they are able to be converted to a common scaling system. The system works by assigning the lowest possible score a value of 100 and the highest a value of 300. From there, any set of MTEL test scores can be converted into this common scaling system. In fact, once a score is converted in this way, it will be called a "scaled score."

On a scale of 100-300, 240 and above is considered a passing score.

It may be common to wonder "how long are MTEL scores good for," and they are good for life. Once an MTEL is passed, it will always be.

When Will I Receive My Results?

If one finds themselves wondering, "when do I get my MTEL scores," fortunately, MTEL results have a quick turnaround.

One can expect to see their scores within 2-5 weeks. Each testing window does have its own corresponding score report date, though. For a more detailed breakdown of when one can access their MTEL score reports, use the table in the subsection below.

During their MTEL registration, individuals can choose to have their scores emailed to them. Logistically, this will be the easiest way to receive your scores. However, if one does not want their scores emailed to them, they can instead check their scores through their account on the MTEL website. Scores are posted at 10 pm Eastern Standard Time on the score date that corresponds to when the MTEL test was taken.

It is also natural to ask "do MTEL scores expire," and the quick answer is that they do not; however the scores will disappear from one's MTEL account after two years.

MTEL Score Reporting

MTEL scores use their own score reporting system; therefore, the scores will be provided by them. The MTEL score report will focus on whether or not it was a passing score. It will also note the day of the MTEL exam, which test it was, how the sections were scored, and the test taker's performance.

How Do I Interpret My Score Report?

MTEL results are laid out in an easy-to-read style. However, knowing what each section specifically reports is important to understand one's test score. So, here is a breakdown and explanation of those sections.

Test Status

This section communicates the most important information: whether or not the MTEL scores were a passing one. It will either say "met the qualifying score" or "did not meet the qualifying score." In relation to the test's title — which will be about the center of the MTEL score report — the test status will be underneath it and to the left.

Test Score

MTEL test scores can be found underneath and to the right of the test's title; it will be along the same line that the test status is found. This section will provide the numerical score that was achieved. Immediately left of it is the minimum passing score for comparison.

Range of Number of Items in Subareas

Each subarea that makes up the test has a range of amount of questions that could be part of it. Therefore, this section details the range of questions that were asked for its corresponding subarea. For example, a subarea could have a range of "31 or more" or a range of "20-25."

Description of Your Subarea Performance and Question Information.

Immediately to the right of the "Range of Number of Items in Subareas" section is the "Subarea Performance and Question Information" section. This section communicates the MTEL scores for each subarea of the MTEL test. Scoring is reported by using ranges rather than reporting questions correct out of total questions.

Multiple-Choice Information

For sections that utilize multiple-choice questions, the MTEL scores these by ranges of how many questions were answered correctly. The best scores to receive would be the "most or all items," and the worst being "few or no items."

Open-Response Information

In contrast, the MTEL scores open-response questions based on the adequacy of the answers. The range of scores for this section range from "thorough" all the way to "weak." Notice that while multiple-choice questions are looking for categorically right-and-wrong answers, open-response questions are looking for depth in their answers.

Score Reporting Section of the Score Report

Above all of these other sections discussed is the "Score Reporting" section. In this section, there will be a short sentence stating whether or not the test taker's scores were sent to the Massachusetts Department of Education. Essentially, this section confirms that the MTEL scores were sent and that they will be reflected on the test taker's license application file.

MTEL Interstate Score Reporting

For out-of-state educators that are looking to transition to an education career in Massachusetts, there is a path to have their licensure exams and scores be forwarded to the Massachusetts Department of Education. Additionally, some MTEL scores can be reported to other states and accepted.

However, sending MTEL results does require a MEPID (Massachusetts Educator Personnel ID). These are simple to obtain, and only require making an account through the Educator Licensure and Renewal (ELAR) system.

After an account is made and a MEPID is gained, the Interstate Score Reporting form can be filled out, submitted, and paid all through the official MTEL website.

For planning purposes, know that this process costs $10 per exam and can take up to four weeks.

States That Offer Interstate Score Reporting

How Do I Request a Copy of My MTEL Score Report?

While MTEL test scores are valid for life, they only are available on the test taker's online account for two years. During those two years, score reports can be viewed, printed, and saved. Fortunately, testing history and passing/failing information are available on the account for life; the specific scores are the part that is only available in that two-year window.

In the event that one needs their MTEL results outside of this two-year window and were unable to secure a physical copy for their records, there is a process to retrieve their scores.

There is a form that can be found and submitted on the official MTEL website. Submission does cost $10 per MTEL result. They accept both VISA and Mastercard as payments.

Requesting a Rescore

Currently, an MTEL rescore request will be flatly denied. And if one is wondering, "can you appeal your MTEL score," the answer is that there is no service in place to facilitate rescoring nor do the test organizers plan on instating such a service. Furthermore, the MTEL organizers stand by their questions, tests, and proctors with confidence.

In other words, if a passing score was not achieved, then the only thing to do is sign up for MTEL again after the 45-day waiting period.

What's Next After Failed MTEL Results?

In the event of a failed MTEL score, the most important thing is to not feel discouraged. MTEL tests are difficult and the MTEL passing rate is lower. For the 2014 tests, General Mathematics had a passing rate of just over 50%; Chemistry had a passing rate of 61%.

Objectively, the best thing to do is wait the mandatory 45-day waiting period, and sign up for the next available MTEL test dates. Additionally, studying within failed subareas and focusing efforts on weak areas is also advisable.

It also helps that test-takers can take the MTEL test as many times as they need to pass.
