The Massachusetts Tests for Educator Licensure (MTEL) program is used by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education to evaluate the knowledge and skills of aspiring teachers in the state. MTEL Communication and Literacy Questions & Structure

The MTEL Communication & Literacy Skills exam is divided into two subtests, one in Reading and one in Writing. Test takers have a total of 4 hours to test when testing in-person. This 4-hour time limit is the same whether they take one or both subtests. Candidates will have an additional 15 minutes to complete a CBT tutorial and nondisclosure agreement. Those who test through online proctoring will have a total of 4 hours to complete both subtests (1 hour and 30 minutes for Reading subtest and 2 hours and 30 minutes for Writing subtest), with a 15-minute break in between. Online testers may also choose to take each subtest separately on different MTEL test dates, with a 3-hour testing session for each subtest.

As mentioned, there are different types of questions found on the MTEL Communication and Literacy exam. The Reading subtest includes only multiple-choice questions, with a total of 42 questions. The Writing subtest has a total of 35 multiple-choice questions, as well as 7 sentence correction items and 2 open-response questions. To get more familiar with these different types of questions, test takers should be sure to find MTEL Reading subtest practice resources and MTEL Writing subtest practice resources. The details of each subtest can be found below, including the different objectives on each subtest.

About the MTEL Reading Subtest

The MTEL Reading subtest has 42 multiple-choice questions that must be completed in 1 hour and 30 minutes (when taking the combined test online), 3 hours (single subtest online), or 4 hours (combined in-person test). The 42 multiple-choice questions are divided into 6 to 8 questions per each of the 6 objectives that the subtest covers. Each of the 6 objectives make up an approximately even percentage of the total subtest (16.7%). The objectives that will be tested on the MTEL Reading subtest are:

  • Meaning of words and phrases
  • Main idea and supporting details
  • Writer's purpose and point of view
  • Relationships among ideas
  • Critical reasoning
  • Outlining, summarizing, graph interpretation

One of the best MTEL reading subtest tips is to complete some type of MTEL Reading subtest practice to get familiar with the types of questions test takers may see on exam day. Specifically, candidates should practice and be prepared to demonstrate skills such as:

  • Providing synonyms or antonyms for words
  • Determining the meaning of words
  • Explaining the main idea of a paragraph
  • Identifying the audience for a written piece
  • Finding relationships between ideas
  • Evaluating facts and data for a written argument
  • Analyzing information found in a graph, chart, or table

About the MTEL Writing Subtest

The MTEL Writing subtest contains several different types of questions that must be completed in 2 hours and 30 minutes (when taking the combined test online), 3 hours (single subtest online), or 4 hours (combined in-person test). During this time, testers must answer questions that address 6 objectives. The first 3 objectives are tested with 35 multiple-choice questions. The 4th objective is tested using 7 sentence-correction items, and the final 2 objectives are evaluated with open-response questions. The multiple-choice and short-answer section of the subtest (objectives 1 through 4) makes up 50% of the exam, while the open-response section (objectives 5 and 6), makes up the other 50% of the exam. The objectives covered on this exam are:

  • Establish and maintain a main idea
  • Sentence construction, grammar, usage
  • Spelling, capitalization, punctuation
  • Revise sentences containing errors
  • Summary exercise
  • Composition exercise

As part of the MTEL Writing subtest practice, candidates will likely want to complete MTEL writing practice. This is because the open-response questions essentially serve as MTEL essay questions. Test takers should also be prepared to demonstrate their skills in:

  • Finding a thesis and topic sentences
  • Identifying sentence fragments, missing prepositions, vague pronouns, and other common errors
  • Finding missing commas, spelling errors, and capitalization errors

Strategies for MTEL Communication and Literacy Exam Prep

MTEL Communication and Literacy prep should begin at least several weeks prior to test day to allow candidates enough time to learn about, study, and review the content of the exam. A good starting place is securing an MTEL Communication and Literacy study guide that outlines the format of the test, including the breakdown and types of questions candidates will see on each subtest. A good MTEL study guide also includes information about the objectives found on each subtest.

Using the objectives, candidates can self-evaluate their skills and create a plan of study. This study plan should carefully organize test takers' study time and focus on areas that are personally challenging and/or areas that make up larger percentages of the exam. Candidates should be sure to break up the content across multiple days of studying so as to not become overwhelmed and only study smaller sections at a time. They should also plan breaks and be sure to get rest.

During the studying process, test takers should utilize a range of study materials. For instance, test takers may use textbooks or library books to study material and create flashcards to review material. It is also a good idea to periodically take an MTEL Communication and Literacy practice test. These tests not only help familiarize candidates with the exam format, but also help test takers monitor their study progress. MTEL practice tests include a range of sample questions that are close to what test takers will see on test day and are typically timed to help candidates practice answering questions under pressure. Some test takers may consider taking MTEL prep courses and joining a study group to review practice test results and test material.
