What Is the ILTS Retake Policy for Missing a Scheduled Exam?

The Illinois Licensure Testing System (ILTS) has policies in place for test takers who miss an exam, arrive late, are absent, or need to cancel their exam.

Late policy: Test-takers who arrive more than 15 minutes late to their scheduled ILTS retake may be denied admission and will forfeit their exam fees. They will be considered absent and required to schedule a future date and pay the appropriate test fee to retake the exam.

Absentee Policy: Test-takers who do not show up for their scheduled ILTS exam retake will forfeit their exam fees and will need to register and pay again to retake the exam.

Emergency policy: In the event of an emergency, such as illness or a family emergency, test-takers may be able to request a fee voucher and use it to pay for a retake at a future date. Test-takers must submit a written request 30 calendar days after the missed retake describing the emergency and attaching the necessary documentation.

Cancellation policy: According to the ILTS retake policy, test-takers who need to cancel their scheduled retake may be able to receive a refund of their exam fees, depending on when they cancel. If a test-taker cancels a scheduled exam at least 24 hours before their scheduled exam time, they are eligible for a full refund.

ILTS Retake Scores

The ILTS retake exam score will replace the prior score. This means that if a test-taker receives a passing score on the retake exam, the previous failed attempt will not be reflected on their record.

The ILTS exams are scored on a scale of 100-300 and the passing score is 240 for all ILTS exams with the exception of the Gifted Education test. The passing score for the Gifted Education test is 220.

After an ILTS retake, test takers can expect to receive their raw score immediately. However, for exams that involve constructed response questions, scores may take longer to become available. The official score report will be sent to the test taker's email, their selected educator preparation program, and the ISBE by the official score report date for their specific testing period. It will include the test taker's overall score as well as a breakdown of their performance in each subarea of the exam. Passing test takers receive licensure once official scores are available.

It's important to note that ILTS exams are scored based on the number of correct answers, so it's important to answer as many questions as possible. There is no penalty for guessing, so test takers should answer as many questions as possible.
