GACE Program Admission Assessment Content and Format

The GACE Program Admission assessment is split into three individual tests: reading, mathematics, and writing. All three Georgia GACE basic skills assessments are computer-based tests. These tests can be taken all at once during the same session or they can be taken in different sessions. The duration of each test is 2 hours per test or 5 hours for combined testing. There is a ten-minute break between each test if all three tests are taken in combination. The single tests do not offer a break. Test duration also includes an introductory stage to familiarize the test taker with the testing station and procedure. This stage requires confirming personal information and includes general testing information such as how to answer questions and how to mark a question for return.

Reading

The GACE basic skills assessment test for reading focuses on the ability to read different types of written material and then understand, analyze, and evaluate them. The questions for each selected passage can be answered using just that passage and do not require any outside knowledge. The questions in each section of the test vary in difficulty in order to assess the test-taker's full range of skills. There are four types of reading selections in this section: pairs of passages, long passages, short passages, and brief statements. The test has a total of 56 selected-response questions and the duration of this test is two hours. The specific subareas of the test, how much they count towards the test-taker's score, and their competency expectations are as follows:

  • Main Ideas and Important Details (35%): Identifying the primary purpose, secondary purpose, and ideas that can be inferred from the selection.
  • Structure of the Selection (30%): Identifying the tone of the piece, how the piece is organized, what the words mean in context, and whether the piece is factually based or based on an opinion.
  • Utilizing Personal Knowledge (35%): Interpreting texts with a visual component, analysis of argumentative writing, and comparing/contrasting two selections.

Mathematics

The GACE basic skills assessment test for mathematics focuses on the understanding of key mathematical concepts and the ability to solve problems with a focus on reasoning skills. The math test involves problems that require the use of multiple skills to reach a solution. This test includes 56 selected-response questions, and the duration is two hours. The three main subareas of the test, their percentage of the test score, and their competency expectations are:

  • Number and Quantity (36%): Solving basic math problems including decimals, fractions, ratios, percentages, constant rates, real-life-based problems, units, and measurements. Test-takers must also understand place value, number order, and properties of whole numbers.
  • Data Interpretation, Statistics, and Probability (32%): Solving problems using data, and the concepts of mean, median, and range. Test-takers must have knowledge of linear relationships, data sets, correlation, causation, and probabilities.
  • Algebra and Geometry (32%): Includes working knowledge of the properties of basic math operations, following algebraic processes, and generating equations; solving word problems, linear equations, and quadratic equations; and using basic geometrical concepts to solve problems including shapes, angles, area, circumference, and volume.

Writing

The GACE basic skills assessment test for writing focuses on the test-taker's writing abilities. This test is made up of three sections: one selected-response section containing 40 questions and two essay sections requiring written responses based on an essay topic. One of the essays is an argumentative essay and the other is an informative, explanatory essay. The argumentative essay requires the test-taker to support a position using specific reasoning and examples drawn from personal experience, observation, or prior knowledge. The informative/explanatory essay requires extracting information from two provided sources. This essay is used to assess the test taker's ability to identify important concepts related to the provided topic. Each is designed to see how effectively a test-taker can produce written content given a limited time period. The test duration is two hours. The two subareas of the test, their percentage of the test score, and their competency expectations are:

  • Different Types of Text, Their Purpose, and Production (60%): Producing written arguments and informative pieces and editing and revisions.
  • Written Language and Research Skills (40%): Exhibiting knowledge of grammar, structural knowledge, correct word choice, punctuation, capitalization, and research abilities.

GACE Program Admission Assessment Scores Explained

The passing score for the GACE Program Admission assessment is scaled. Test takers will need a final score of 250 on the reading test, 250 on the writing test, and 250 on the mathematics test. The GACE scores needed by candidates to pass were established by the Georgia Professional Standards Commission (GaPSC) with input from Georgia educators. As of July 1, 2021, the GaPSC will accept a score of less than 250 on a single individual test as long as the combined score of all three tests is at least 750. This allows test takers who do well on one test and not as well on another the possibility of meeting the minimum score requirement. Once an individual has passed a GACE test, that particular test does not need to be taken again. Failed tests can be retaken to achieve a passing score.
