CBEST/CSET Information

California Teacher Certification Exams

Prospective teachers in the state of California may be required to take one or more teacher certification exams in order to earn their credentials. The state of California offers a number of exams, including the California Basic Educational Skills Test (CBEST) and the California Subject Examinations for Teachers (CSET). While the CBEST tests a prospective teacher's basic proficiency in the areas of Math, Reading, and Writing, the CSET exams are geared towards assessing higher-level proficiency in specific subject areas. Which specific exams a prospective teacher may need to pass depends on the subject area(s) and grade level(s) they are hoping to teach.
